Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous rowing experience to join the team?

Not at all, most of our current members had no rowing experience when they started on the team.

How do I join the rowing team?

In order to join the team, all you need to do is show up at one of our weekly general meetings, show up at practice and then go from there.

How big is the team?

The team has ranged in size over the past couple of years. Currently the team has around thirty active members.

Are there different positions on the team?

There are a two main positions on the team, the rowers and the coxswain. The coxswain is an extremely important member of the team who motivates rowers, steers the boats and calls the race plan. Both positions are always in need of new members.

What are the costs?

Each semester, dues of $50.00 are paid to the team. These dues cover the use of our facilities and our equipment. Along with the $50.00, members must pay to go on regattas, which are rowing competitions. Costs vary depending on the regatta, but typically are no more than $40.00 to row. You must also keep in mind, you may be placed in up to three or four boats. However, most people usually have two races they compete in.

Where are general meetings held?

General meetings are held every Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. in the Voyageur South room located on the second floor of the Atwood Memorial Center. Meeting places are subject to change so be sure to check the meeting location next to the stairs in Atwood.

What does being a club sport mean?

Being a club sport team, practice attendance is not mandatory. The more you show up to practice, the better you will be and the more boats you will be placed in during regattas. It basically comes down to: You get out of the sport what you put in. The more time you put in the better you will be. The commitment you put into the sport is completely up to you.

Where are rowing competitions typically held?

To begin with, a rowing competition is often referred to as a regatta. The Saint Cloud State Rowing team travels all throughout the midwest. With regattas in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Wisconsin the team meets and competes against teams from across the country. This fall the rowing team will also be competing in Winona, MN and the Twin Cities as well.

Where does the team practice?

During the fall, the team practices just upriver of the 10th Street bridge located near the heating plant. Over the winter, practices typically take place in Halenbeck Hall. The spring practices take place at Wilson park, which is located a few miles upriver from the campus directly across from the St. Cloud Hospital.
